PROPERTY BUREAU

(626) 580-2129

The Property Bureau is responsible for receivng, storing, tracking and disposing of all property and evidence booked at the police department by sworn personnel, crime scene technicians, and code enforcement officers.  Property and evidence include items such as firearms, electronics, jewelry, bicycles, drugs, and personal items.  Property is considered items held for safekeeping and found property.  Thousands of items are processed each year.  Entry into the property rooms is limited to authorized personnel only in order to maintain the integrity of the property and evidence.
The Property Bureau is staffed by one full-time civilian employee.  Property is released by appointment only, Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., closed for lunch and holidays.  Appointments can be made by calling (626) 580-2129.  A valid driver’s license or identification card is required for all property release.
Safekeeping property is held for 60 days.  If the owner cannot pick up the property, he/she must submit in writing a request to hold property for an additional 10 months or authorize someone to pick up the property or it will be destroyed or auctioned per departmental policy.
Found property is held for 90 days.  If no owner can be located the property will be destroyed or auctioned per department policy.  If the finder wishes to claim ownership, and if no owner can be found, they must state so at the time the property is turned over to the police department.
Evidence is held until the investigating detective authorizes destruction or returns the property to its owner.  If the owner cannot be located or does not claim the property, it will be destroyed or auctioned per departmental policy.
Firearms:  Before any firearm is released, approval must be obtained from the investigating detective before it can be released.  Any person wishing to retrieve their firearm must submit a Law Enforcement Gun Release Application to the Department of Justice (DOJ).  Once a DOJ clearance letter is received, you must make an appointment with the Property Bureau and pick up the firearm within 30 days of the date on the letter received from DOJ.  Link to Law Enforcement Gun Release Application -
