The EMPD Crime Scene Unit assists the department in areas that require training and expertise in the collection, documentation, preservation, and analysis of physical evidence. This includes photography and video taping, evidence collection, surveillance video enhancement, and the development and identification of latent prints.
The Crime Scene Unit consists of two Crime Scene Technicians and one Lead Crime Scene Technician who supervises the unit and performs the same duties as the other technicians.
The El Monte Police Department is one of nine municipal police agencies in Los Angeles County that is designated as a LACRIS (Los Angeles County Regional Identification System) site. All latent prints of sufficient quality are searched through this database, regardless of the severity of the crime.
Crime Scene Technicians routinely testify in court as expert witnesses. They are most often required to testify on the identification of prints lifted from crime scenes.
