The Cold Case Unit was formed by Chief of Police Ken Weldon in late 2006.
The purpose of the unit is to re-examine older unsolved cases with an emphasis on homicides. Using recently available technology such as DNA, cases that could not be solved when they occurred are reexamined to determine if any additional Forensic testing may be appropriate.
Another important aspect of the unit is to determine if upon further investigation, interviews of witnesses or offenders may lead to a solution. Many times witnesses were threatened or intimidated at the time of the offense, but are now in a position to come forward with a statement or clue that may lead to a successful conclusion.
As with all investigations the cooperation of the public is critical in obtaining additional information and evidence in these cases.
Currently two retired El Monte Police Officers with 67 years of investigative experience are assigned to this unit. The unit is funded by a grant from the State of California.
If anyone has any inquiries or information on any cold or current cases they can call or e-mail (confidentially if desired) either members of this Unit.
